Many people across the world decorate eggs as part of their culture. In the USA, the stores sell dye kits. But, what if you forgot to buy a kit??
Your pantry is full of items that can dye eggs, or fabric! You might be surprised what colors you can create. Red to make green? Purple to make blue? Green to make pink?
Here is a list of items that you can use to dye eggs, or a t-shirt, or a pillowcase! Don't forget to ask for permission before grabbing something to dye, or something to dye with!
Tips: always add a dash of vinegar to help the color set & you will need to leave the eggs or fabric in the natural dye longer than when you use a kit (maybe overnight for bright colors)
Reddish: Put of a few tablespoons of paprika into boiling water and let steep.
Light Pink: Simmer avocado skins and the pit for 20 minutes to create a light pink dye
Pink: use the juice from canned beets to create a medium pink
Orange: Boil the skins of yellow onions to create an orange dye
Yellow: Simmer chopped carrots for 15 minutes, or put of a few tablespoons of tumeric in boiling water and let steep, to create a lovely yellow
Green: Boil the skins of red onions to make a green dye (crazy!)
Blue: Boil chopped purple (red) cabbage for 15 minutes to make a blue dye (leave eggs in the blue, and then the green, to make aqua!)
Lavender: use some grape juice (don't forget to add the vinegar)
Blue-gray: mashed blueberries boiled in water make a beautiful blue-gray dye
Brown: use some cooled, strong coffee
