ROCKETS! Simple & Complex

By request, here are some awesome rocket activities you can do at home!

PROPULSION: Where does the word come from?

Latin: pro-push, pellere- to drive

So, PROPULSION means to drive forward, or the action of being driven forward.

This is an example of Newton’s Third Law of Motion:

FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION

Rockets have propulsion systems, which uses a chemical reaction to create THRUST to push the rocket forward.

THRUST is the propulsive force of the rocket. It is the push made by the propulsion system.

Here are some articles to help explain this better:

Here is a great video that explains rocket science:

Still curious.... there different types of rocket propulsion! Learn about the types of rocket propulsion here:

Now, let’s have some fun! There are several types of rockets you can make at home, if you have the supplies. We are going to start simple, and get more complex (and a little more dangerous) as we scroll down.

Here are some videos showing you how to make cold air rockets. You might remember some of these from STEAM night:

This one has more steps, but looks like fun! You can use tape instead of hot glue:

Many rockets have different stages of fuel. Here is a simple two-stage balloon rocket to help push your rocket ever further!

THIS SHOULD ONLY BE DONE WITH A PARENT

Ready for a chemical reaction? (Don’t forget to get permission on this one, and make sure to be outside.) Here’s a chemical rocket:

THIS SHOULD ONLY BE DONE WITH A PARENT

Ready to launch even higher? Here’s a great water rocket to make if you have a bike pump at home. Here are some rules before you try this:

1. Work with a parent on this one!

2. This is an outside activity.

3. Make sure you have plenty of space… this rocket can break a window or dent a car if you aren’t careful.

4. ALWAYS AIM THE ROCKET AWAY FROM YOUR FACE, AND WEAR EYE PROTECTION!!!

Here is a video explaining the construction of the rocket:

Here is a video showing the launching of the rocket (remember… aim away from your face!! Never stand above the rocket while you add the air!!!)

I hope you had fun! Send me some videos and I’ll share them on my site!
